Embellished jeans are the rage this season. Again, nothing new here. In the sixties many young people were decorating their jeans with anything from applied patches, to hand embroidered designs, to drawing on them with a felt tip marker or even a “Bic” pen. The Woodstock counterculture adopted the working man's attire and adapted it with homegrown decorations.

In the 1970's, the sharp and clean cut disco fashion is imported from Europe, promptly displacing the unkempt hippy look. It was a time of tight bellbottoms with refined pocket decorations. The 1980's saw a comeback of the traditional cowboy image, metal studs and all.

It was in 1999, however, that Tom Ford presented his frayed, embroidered, low rise Gucci's in the Paris catwalks, going for a mere $3,500! The term "luxe hippie" is coined, and denim would never be perceived the same way again. This induction set the stage for the jeans revolution that we are living today.

Like so many other objects, the simple egalitarian blue jeans has reached levels of ornamentation (and price) that were unimaginable just a decade ago. The quality and sophistication of the decoration that we have seen these last couple of seasons are amazing! Possibly too much for some tastes, and pocket books, but sometimes trends have to swing far in one direction in order to eventually find their proper place.

I don’t believe this is a fad. Embellished jeans, jackets and skirts are here to stay. It is the style of the ornaments that will vary and evolve, and their quality that will make them timeless.

In the sixties, the images that were used were from a grassroots movement: flower power, peace signs, bubble letters. This millenium has seen a coming of age of the embellished jeans. The canvas has been liberated! We are seeing an enormous array of graphics as well as techniques:

Advances in fabric finishes and cuts have paved the way to an ever more sophisticated product. The selling point of jeans is no longer just “comfortable and long lasting”.

Then again, not all embellishments, by the mere fact of being plastered on a well cut and finished pair of jeans (let’s take this as a given) are worthy of praise and our hard earned money.

Selecting a pair of embellished jeans is certainly not easy, and taste will play a large role. It’s ultimately a matter of talented design, good judgment, skillful craftsmanship and a fit with your style.

Food For Thought

Still, there are some who really hate this trend. They would like to see embellishment start at the tag and end at the pocket details. Here is a question for the denim purists: does the elaborate ornamentation applied to Greek pottery diminish the artistic value of its pure utilitarian shapes? This is by no means a new issue. It has raged for generations in the history of art and architecture. Some movements in 20th century architecture rebelled against any form of ornamentation in buildings, calling it “decadent” and even “immoral”!

I personally like to see designers flaunt their stuff, good or bad…it doesn’t mean I’ll buy into every trend that comes along, and neither should you. Use your judgment. Consider your budget, when and where you'll be using these jeans.

Some Other Things to Consider

If you do not want to attract too much attention to your rear end, don’t decorate it! Look for embellished jeans that have longer “strands” of ornament along the side of the legs, preferably below the knee.
Dry clean all of your embellished jean wear.
Remember that destroyed jeans are way past their point of no return with respect to aging. Very expensive destroyed and embellished jeans may not be your best investment.

Being bootylicious is nothing to be ashamed of (just look at Beyoncé’s hot bod!), but in today’s image-conscious society it’s no wonder that even the slightest dimple triggers a near meltdown. Though women may be the fairer sex, men get a fairer deal in this area: Men’s connective tissue effectively holds fat together under the skin, whereas women tend to have a shortage of this connective tissue, which causes excess fat to bulge out toward the skin’s surface in the form of cellulite. Women also tend to have a thinner , making each bump easier to see.

Before you begin envying your boyfriend’s cellulite-free legs, however, lighten up—because there are ways to fight back against those pesky fat pockets before resorting to doctor-prescribed laser treatments and. The first thing you can do to reduce cellulite and its unsightly appearance is to tweak your diet accordingly. Limit your salt intake—salt absorbs water and too much of it can result in your body retaining the water it consumes. Next, try supplementing meals with more protein and fiber, as these help to firm-up the muscles that keep fat stores in place. Bioflavonoids found in foods like tomatoes, cabbage, and citrus fruits are also favorable allies since they strengthen capillaries and blood flow (increased circulation loosens cellulite). Lastly, never underestimate the healthful benefits of green tea; a potent antioxidant, the herb has been shown to heighten the rate at which the body burns unwanted calories and fat.

In addition to adopting an anti-cellulite meal plan, exercise is required to burn fat and increase blood flow to skin cells. Manually stimulating the circulatory and lymphatic systems that break down fatty tissue is also suggested; exercise alone doesn’t always target problem areas like the inner knees and upper thighs, so massaging them with your hands will prove handy. For extra fat-busting capabilities, add an anti-cellulite cream to the mix: Though the visible results will only last so long (think less than 24 hours), formulas that contain caffeine, seaweed, herbs, spices, and/or bioflavonoids may temporarily lessen evidence of cellulite. Another quick cosmetic fix: Self-tanner. After exfoliating and massaging, apply a tanning product to the skin to mask imperfections.

Your monthly horoscope may point to astral elements as indicators of your sex life (or lack thereof), but what about seasonal influences? Here, a look at how weather changes can play a role in whether you feel like going on the prowl—or making a date with Ben & Jerry.

Spring and Summer

Summer lovin’ made a name for itself in Grease, and “spring fling” is in our vocabulary for the long-term. But in addition to its colloquial interpretations, hot-weather lust may have a scientific basis, too. Melanocyte Stimulating Hormone (MSH) has been linked to increased sex drive in women, and exposure to sunlight elevates the production and secretion of this substance. The reason: MSH regulates the synthesis of melanin, protective pigment that turns your skin a darker shade to protect it from harmful UV rays.

Serotonin, a feel-good neurotransmitter produced by the brain, may also be responsible for heightened mood and sex drive during spring and summer. Multiple studies have suggested that the production of serotonin is directly related to sunlight and that with increased luminosity comes increased serotonin levels.

But despite these hot-weather helpers, it’s possible that you may still get spring and summer blues (and the resulting lack of libido). Though rare, Reverse Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is when warmer temperatures make a person feel cooped up instead of carefree. Characterized by anxiety, decreased appetite, insomnia, and irritability, the condition is triggered by longer days and too much heat and/or light. Those who experience Reverse SAD report feeling attacked by the sun and tend to go into Twilight mode—avoiding sunlight at all costs, taking frequent cold showers, and scampering from one air-conditioned environment to the next. To help patients escape from this ghostlike existence, doctors often prescribe therapy or medication.

Fall and Winter

Once fall hits, it’s no wonder your mojo goes into hiding—with less intense sunlight (and fewer hours of daytime), the sex-fueling serotonin from summer is present at lower levels. Replacing it is melatonin, serotonin’s Debbie Downer of a sister, which is produced in greater quantities when you’re in a dark environment.

This change in weather—and neurotransmitters—has a greater impact on some than others. But if you experience symptoms such as daytime fatigue and lethargy, excessive sleep, weight gain, sugar cravings, depression, and—oh, yeah—decreased interest in sex, you might have Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). To get your biological clock (and your sex life) back in order, make an appointment with a qualified mental health professional. As the first order of treatment, light therapy will likely be prescribed: According to the (NAMI), this method has a 50 to 80 percent success rate among patients. If you don’t respond to treatment, however, your doctor can suggest alternative options such as antidepressants or counseling. That said, expect your mood—and sex drive—to improve around March or April.

I love fall’s ’60s trend. How do I embrace it without looking like Austin Powers?

Well, there’s a lot to love about ’60s fashion. All those limbs! The cute little go-go boots! The zippers and big buttons! It's fresh, it has energy and style—it feels young. Where it goes horribly wrong and goofy is when people get all Austin Powers about it and make it costumey. The style can be done with just a print, a silhouette, a hemline. Modern-day ’60s chic goddesses Kate Moss and Irina Lazareanu epitomize this perfectly, in their tiny little skirts, rock-star fur vests, and drapey Ossie Clark originals—but instead of looking retro, they look stylish, ahead of the curve.

Rule of thumb: Take only the best of it. Phillip Lim did exactly this in his runway show, blending together the three ’60s muses: mod, Biba, and girlfriend of a Rolling Stone into one fabulous collection. From Bianca Jagger types, he sampled the androgynous skinny-skinny pantsuits and over-the-top shaggy furs and vests. From mod, he took straight, clean cuts and defiantly short hemlines; from Biba, the lush, ’30s-inflected glamour of the iconic label—delicately swirly dresses, oversize florals, and diaphanous, Gypsyish allure.

Skip the ’60s accessories and shoes that instantly scream costume—frankly, all that Brave New World jewelry and awkward footwear never really worked to begin with.

Six weeks later, she came back to for another haircut—her bangs were longer, and we just cut a little bit more off her length. The next thing you know, her bangs were down to her chin, and the rest of her hair was at her shoulders in these long, loose layers that sort of flipped out—and that’s what we called the Rachel.

There are giant oatmeal cookies, thick, chewy brownies, and milk chocolate bonbons galore; sugar-sweet cereals, buckets of Twizzlers, hot buttered popcorn, and more; strawberry shortcake with baseball-size berries and homemade whipped cream to explore…Oompa-Loompas and Everlasting Gobstoppers aside, Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory has nothing on the Disney Channel’s Hannah Montana set, a junk food paradise where children of all ages and crewmembers of all sizes avoid the platters of fresh vegetables and sandwiches like the plague.

At the center of this teen idyll is the most golden of the Golden Ticket holders, Miley Cyrus, otherwise known as Hannah Montana, the secret pop-star alter ego of TV high-schooler Miley Stewart. She’s the one over there in the red BeDazzled jacket and pink rhinestone fingerless glove, the one with two multiplatinum albums, a sold-out concert tour, two hit films, a best-selling autobiography, and a new clothing line. Right now she’s the one having to literally act her age—16—in a scene where Miley’s sorry for complaining about her best friend, Lilly (Emily Osment), and her “squeaky, leaky” pet hamster behind her back. “As miserable as I was,” Cyrus is saying, “I was 10 times more miserable when I came back and my best friend was gone.” The girls hug, the director cuts, and the caged rodent keeps spinning his wheel. Cyrus flops down on the twin bed, stares at the hamster, and says to no one in particular, “Why does he think that’s fun?” She lets out a deep laugh. “That mouse is running crooked like he’s drunk!” A set photographer asks the costars to pose together, to which Cyrus, feigning diva, replies, “You’ll have to call my agent.”

Past the sets of Miley’s bedroom; the Stewarts’ Malibu kitchen; Rico’s Surf Shop on the beach…down one long corridor and then another, is Cyrus’ dressing room, where her grandmother Loretta “Mammie” Finley is sitting where she sits every day, in an alcove, armed with a letter opener, surrounded by postal buckets overflowing with fan mail. Still a great beauty, she wears a silvery white bouffant and black rhinestone glasses. “I open it all,” Finley says in a soft Southern lilt. She holds up a stamped 8" x 10" envelope self-addressed in curlicue handwriting. “They send one of these, and I send them back an autographed picture.” Her slender, manicured hand picks up a letter. “Some of them are sick,” she says, her voice sad. “We send those letters to the Make a Wish Foundation. Every week we have a Make a Wish kid who’s terminally ill visit the set. Had one today.”

Yapping at Finley’s heels are Cyrus’ pet Yorkies, Rodeo and Sophie, the latter having just had knee-replacement surgery. Suddenly, Cyrus comes running down the hall, ducking behind a side curtain. Tearing back out, she’s trailed by a lanky, dark, dreamboat of a guy carrying a guitar. This would be Justin Gaston, boyfriend, aspiring musician and actor, and God-fearing Christian, who has a scripture verse, Psalms 7:8, tattooed down his back: “Judge me, oh Lord, according to my righteousness.” He’s often referred to as an underwear model, having posed in Hugo Boss, Abercrombie & Fitch, and Diesel skivvies. His girlfriend finds this annoying. “He was younger when he did that. He was 18, 19!” she says. He’s 20 now. And according to the publicist giving the tour, he’s running away from me.

Fall’s over-the-knee boots have arrived. The sexy runway trend—spotted everywhere from Rodarte to Louis Vuitton—looks right for day and night, at work or out on the town (disclaimer: save LV’s hip-grazing pair for après-office). In the years since my prom in 1997, fashion choices for the big event have changed drastically. I wore a brownish printed dress from the '70s—a cheapy I scored at the now-defunct East Village treasure Love Saves the Day. I paired my retro dress, which was made before I was born, with Steve Madden platforms (much to my dismay, one of my best friends wore the same ones). Nowadays, or so I hear, kids growing up in New York wear Preen and Hervé Léger for their prom night festivities. My most high-fashion prom moment was changing into a Betsey Johnson minidress for the after-party. But, all these years later I still wear both pieces (most recently, I wore my long brown prom dress at the Cannes Film Festival). If I were 17 again, I'd be tempted to wear one of these resort 2010 looks: Alexander Wang sparkle minidress (sexy in that I'm-not-trying-too-hard kind of way), Celine top and slim pants (who says you have to wear a dress to the prom?), Stella McCartney gold gown (all-out glamour, without a hint of pouf), and Louis Vuitton black halter dress (classic, perfect).

The Juicy Girl Grows Up

Pamela Skaist-Levy and Gela Nash-Taylor, a.k.a. Juicy Couture’s creators, are at it again. The godmothers of the sexy sweat-suit and that covetable cool California style have conjured up a new, grown-up label called Bird. The 30-piece line features feminine touches, exposed zippers, and ombre patterns, plus the most wearable black stretch pencil skirt I’ve seen in ages. The price point, though 30 percent higher than Juicy Couture’s, will start at just $150 (and go up to $1000 for leather pieces). Standouts include a faux Mongolian cape (at left) and second-skin leather leggings. Summer Weekend Carryall

After seeing a recent shot of Kate Moss jetting off to her Cotswolds country house carrying a chic straw-and-leather bag I’ve been searching for one just like it (it’s the perfect thing for summer weekend getaways and even carting small loads of laundry or groceries). The go-anywhere carryall looks just like the bags you’ll find at the entrance to Anthropologie stores (the ones you can carry around while you shop).

Though that particular style is not for sale, the store offers a with resin embellishments, for $24.

Miley Cyrus was born eight years after Madonna burst onto the scene in the ‘80s wearing piled on chains, tulle skirts, and bustiers. The generational gap hasn’t stopped the young performer from rocking the Material Girl’s iconic style, circa 1984. At her movie opening in Spain a few months back, Cyrus reinterpreted the look quite literally, wearing layered necklaces, stacked bracelets, white undershirt, and a full, tutu-like skirt. What do you think: cute or costumey?

Dreaming of Boots, Coveting Sandals

I’m of two minds as of late. One half of my brain is devoted to fall’s hard-rocking boots—over-the-knee, platform, lace-up!—while the other is still dreaming of spring’s sexiest sandals (it’s 80 degrees in New York today). For a myriad of reasons—budget, budget, budget—I’ve yet to get my hands on last season’s key shoes, the ones I frantically scribbled pictures of as they stomped down the spring runways. With Barneys’ huge designer sale going on right now (key styles are up to 70% off), my transition from summer to fall is that much harder. Here, a few holdovers from my spring wish-list (with shots of the runway originals on Lara Stone).

Olivier Theyskens delivers high-voltage drama for fall 2009

For Olivier Theyskens’ final collection for Nina Ricci, the fantastical designer delivered a high-voltage fall 2009 lineup, filled with drama, sex appeal, humor, and expertly cut clothes (everything you’d want in a fashion show). Now back to those sex-infused fashions—there were the towering heelless crystal-covered platforms, the microminis, and, let’s not forget, those shimmering catsuits (not to mention the corseted dresses, sheer skirts, and up-to-there slits). Bottom line: Theyskens went out with a bang, making every editor in town wait with bated breath for the designer’s next move.

Marc Jacobs ended the season at Louis Vuitton in Paris as he began it with his own show in New York: with the eighties. Different city, different accent, though, and this slice of the late eighties—ruffled, ruched, and poufed as it was—looked as if Jacobs had pulled out his 1987 magazines and worked up a playful homage to Christian Lacroix. He didn't quite put it that way backstage, however. Jacobs said that, partly in preparation for the Model as Muse exhibition at the Met and his role as honorary chair of the opening gala, he was thinking of "all those great French muses of the late eighties." Specifically, he cited Marie Seznec (who modeled for Lacroix), Victoire de Castellane (who worked for Chanel), and Inès de la Fressange (who was virtually French fashion mascot in chief at the time).

Looking back on those days of chichi fashion extremes brought out a lot of jeune Parisienne frivolity in the clothes, if not the staging, which was done, pseudo-salon style, without a runway (albeit in a large transparent tent parked, as usual, in a courtyard of the Louvre). The chance of a close inspection revealed lots of puffy peplum jackets, tons of shirring and ruching (in print or leather), bubble skirts, bejeweled satin leggings, and a mini lace Marie Antoinette pannier dress with a saucy sheer balconette. Jacobs' take on big shoulders ran from grosgrain bow-smothered balloon puffs to the widest short coats (in camel or red) on any runway—almost as broad as they were long.

It was also a rich accessory fest for the leather goods company. Leather necklaces and belts came fashioned like paper chains, and thigh boots were topped with ruffles and balanced on pearl and glitter-covered heels. The all-important bags had also acquired eighties pie-crust frills and gilded monograms. If it wasn't quite the fashion tour de force of Vuitton's Spring collection, this penultimate show of an often dour and cautious season read as a welcome interlude of cheerful, flirty confidence in a post-crash depression.
